When the charity started out in 1984, our early support was directed towards the Secondary School, the District Hospital and the Women’s Textile Group run as a means whereby the women could help their families out of poverty by making women’s and children’s clothes.
By running jumble sales, coffee mornings and flag days we raised the money to equip the women’s and children’s wards in the hospital with louvre windows.
The building had been put up but the money ran out so that without windows the wind blew the rain in making it unusable.
We sent the money together with blankets and woolen clothing, mainly provided by Peniel WI, and received grateful thanks.
We later sent loads of medical equipment, sewing machines for the women’s co-operative and books and hand tools for the school.
Another of our efforts was unglamorous but essential – the renewal of the broken down sewerage system at the hospital.
The British High Commissioner for Tanzania visited Carmarthen in 2000 and greatly encouraged us by his very well informed interest; indeed thanks to his influence, Tanzanian Army Engineers helped in the construction of our sewerage project.
Since its inception in 1984 funds raised by Cwlwm Monduli have continued to fund projects, all proposed by local communities and supported by local labour. Fund-raising has been primarily by events in Carmarthenshire and money raised by pupils in a London Primary School and by students at Coventry University.
